FAQ: What Else Do You Want to Know?
Tell me about communication–how will I keep track of what my child is doing during tutoring?
Tutors keep track of everything that happens during tutoring sessions in a shared Google Doc, which will be sent to you after each session. This includes topics covered, how well your child understood the topics, and homework where applicable. We consider this a partnership with parents and welcome parent feedback.
How about the teacher? Does s/he stay in the loop?
We specialize in partnering with teachers for the success of the student, and teachers report that the love is mutual. This teamwork allows our tutors to prepare students incredibly well for tests and quizzes, because we know when the assessments take place and the topics covered.
How many sessions do you recommend?
This varies by family. Many families set up weekly sessions, some set up multiple sessions per week, and some families specifically add a session or multiple sessions in advance of quizzes, tests, and exams.
Is this the same for the SAT/ACT?
When we initially speak to families, we establish a baseline where the student is currently performing and discuss goals, both in terms of test scores and also college aspirations. The total number of sessions then varies by amount of improvement set as a goal, amount of lead time before the test, number of times that the student takes the SAT/ACT, and by the level of improvement that a student demonstrates. Almost all test prep students meet with their tutors weekly at a minimum.
Which do you recommend–ACT or SAT?
This very much depends on the student. Both the SAT and the ACT have changed drastically over the past 3 years, which also affects the recommendation. Factors that affect the selection of SAT versus ACT include recommendations by college counselors, extended time considerations, strength in math versus reading/writing, level of vocabulary, length of the test, preference for testing on the computer versus on paper, comfort with fill-in-the blank versus all multiple choice, and knowledge of the Desmos graphing calculator. We are happy to work with you to select the test that makes the most sense for you. In some cases we have had students elect to take both tests. We love preparing students for both tests and have no preference ourselves!
How does payment work?
Payment is required by the beginning of the tutoring session. Our tutors accept Venmo, Zelle, and Paypal.
What if I need to cancel?
Because our tutors are in demand, we respectfully request at least 24 hours notice for cancellations. Families who cancel with less than 24 hours notice are expected to pay for the session.
How does Oberman Tutoring select tutors?
We conduct interviews with our tutors, all of whom are experienced teachers/tutors, ensuring that our tutors are excellent educators who are caring, passionate, and strong communicators.
